Covid-19 crisis: Lockdown, as a strategy to control the pandemic, has proven to be neither good nor bad

As predictable as it can be, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the lockdown at 8:00 PM on March 24, 2020, giving the country and its 1.3 billion people all of four hours to get ready, evoking memories of the demonetisation announcement and the midnight launch of GST. This was done by invoking the National Disaster Management Act, 2005.

While many analysts lauded the communication strategy of the leader ‘directly’ speaking to the people as political decisiveness, our contention in this column is that it was a clear case of using ‘command and control’ strategy instead of cooperative federalism, which the government was taking pains to highlight that it believed in. The manner in which we are getting out of the lockdown, with an ad hoc and arbitrary exit strategy, at a time when the number of Covid-19 cases has seen a mountainous surge (almost every other day previous records are being broken), shows a clear lack of planning, and sadly reeks of cluelessness.

While the intent of the lockdown was ‘to flatten the curve’ and control the spread of the pandemic, almost irreversible economic disruption resulted in many sectors, and a mounting humanitarian crisis through the exodus of migrant labour is staring at us with all its severity. Empirical evidence shows that on March 24 the number of confirmed cases stood at 564, with a recorded death toll of 10. India has broken into the list of top-10 most affected countries in terms of Covid-19 positive cases.

To put things in perspective, official statistics reveal that as of June 9 the outbreak of Covid-19 had been confirmed in 215 countries, and we, along with the US, Brazil, Russia, Spain, the UK, Italy, France and Germany, are among the most severely affected. As of June 9, the virus had infected 266,598 people in India, and the mortality had risen to 7,466.

Lockdown, as a strategy to control the pandemic, has proven to be neither good nor bad. From the Indian perspective, ideally, it would have been effective had this period been used for improving the healthcare infrastructure or at least boosting up the public health budget to deal with the imminent crisis. Constitutionally, even though public health is a state subject, in the Seventh Schedule (it defines allocation of powers and functions between the Centre and states), entries 28 and 81 in the Union List deal with “port quarantine, including hospitals connected therewith,” and “inter-state migration and inter-state quarantine,” respectively. The intergovernmental framework is thus crucial in dealing with the pandemic through policy coordination and fiscal transfers, especially when states are doing the heavy lifting to control the pandemic, despite their constrained fiscal space.

In an ideal world, the fiscal decentralisation at the local level—the principle of subsidiarity—would have been the effective policy mechanism, meaning the decision-making processes in a crisis being carried out at the level of the government closest to the people. But, in India, the Covid-19 policy response has been highly centralised. Although there have been a few online meetings between CMs and the PM, they have not been effective as almost all decisions have been taken unilaterally. Even the decision to go ahead with the lockdown was not discussed in the PM’s videoconference with CMs. Also, in spite of early warning from the WHO in January, India’s response, with the closure of international borders and ports entry, was woefully late, quite obviously to make way for the Namaste Trump event to take place, and cater to some of the government’s ‘more urgent’ political considerations.

Now, we are staring at a dual crisis—a public health crisis and an economic crisis, through irreparable disruptions in supply chains. The pandemic hit the Indian economy when it was on a significant slowdown mode. The announced fiscal and monetary package of Rs 20 lakh crore has been largely for infusing liquidity into the system for an economic revival, in long-term reform-oriented tranches. These tranches appear more or less ‘business as usual’ rather than an ‘emergency pandemic package’. Interestingly, most analysts have identified the actual Covid-19 response package as being only 1% of GDP or thereabouts, and not 10% as announced by the government.

The trade-off between ‘life’ and ‘livelihood’, and the government’s appalling apathy in dealing with the plight of migrant labourers, is rapidly burgeoning into a humanitarian crisis of mammoth proportions, with the increasing number of hunger deaths. The lack of authentic data on Covid-19 positive cases and the mortality is another area of concern. The recent data from cremation and burial grounds in Delhi contradicts the official Covid-19 mortality statistics by being almost four times higher than the official figure. This makes one wonder whether there is gross underreporting of data, both at the central and state levels. The lack of preparedness for aggressive testing, treating and quarantining—asymptomatic and symptomatic tests—during the prolonged lockdown provokes dismay, to say the least; this, in spite of the WHO’s clarion call to ‘test, test, test’.

South Korea has been regarded as a benchmark on this front, and its success in containing the pandemic is largely due to the aggressive testing strategy. Interestingly, the epicentre of the pandemic has shifted from China to G7 countries, and now to Brazil and India.

Needless to say, these are politically challenging times for the government, and the diversion of focus from the pandemic to policies towards tackling external aggression (this time, from China) could prove costly. We are tackling a pandemic, and the projected skill-sets and carefully created image and characteristics of a leader would not help in dealing with it. For that, we need strong ‘institutions’ and ‘policy certainty’. But, for the moment, all that one can infer is—as a country, the policy that came directly from the central government has been far from adequate. While there have been some bright spots, the successes have been exclusively at the level of states. One can only hope that the Centre scales up its policy responses and intensifies its efforts at mitigating, and providing relief to, this human and economic catastrophe, before it gets too late.

As of May 29th 2020, the virus had infected 165,799 people in India, and the mortality had risen to 4903.

Lockdown, as a strategy to control the coronavirus pandemic, has proven to be neither good nor bad. Even the decision to go ahead with the curfew and lockdown was not discussed in the Prime Minister’s video conference with various Chief Ministers on March 20th 2020. Another very vital point that should not be missed is that in spite of the early warning from the WHO about the pandemic in January 2020, India’s response, with the closure of its international borders and ports of entry, was woefully late, quite obviously to make way for the Namaste Trump event to take place, and cater to some of the governments “more urgent” political considerations.

With economic activity almost ground to a standstill, the lockdown, even though it was a relevant policy response to deal with the pandemic, has had to be extended indiscriminately for a longer haul, due to the lack of preparedness to exit or a clear-cut exit plan. This, in effect, has created a dual crisis to respond to: a public health crisis and an economic crisis, through irreparable disruptions in supply chains. Needless to say, these are politically challenging times for the government, and the diversion of focus from the virus pandemic to policies towards tackling external aggression (this time from China) could prove costly. We are tackling a pandemic, and the projected skill sets and carefully created image and characteristics of a leader would not help in dealing with it. Old Wine in a New Bottle Won't Sell Anymore!

I feel Rahul Gandhi, at this point in time, is the main bottleneck in the Congress party. If the party has to come up in some way, from the utter doldrums they it is in, he and his family will have to step down and make way for more efficient leadership. No amount of playing the good boy, or hugging for that matter, is gonna help him or his party in anyway. The sooner he realises that, the better for him and the Congress party. His ineptitude had a massive role to play in the utter drubbing the Congress got at the hands of the BJP in 2014, and even more so in 2019. And the whole strategy of projecting this “good-boy-who-forgives (and hugs to boot)” image would not work against street smart hustlers like the Modi-Shah combine! What the Congress party needs is decisive, proven, overtly powerful leadership that takes visibly tough decisions. While Shashi Tharoor and Chidambaram are too elitist to make any sort of impact, I feel someone like Capt Amarinder Singh would fit the bill perfectly. But it should be a collective decision to project him as their PM candidate for 2024, and it takes vision, which Rahul lacks, and pathetically so! No amount of denial will help a party that is virtually on its deathbed, and the fact that the Nehru/Gandhi family is holding it there will have to be acknowledged!

Excuses like Rahul and his “pan India reach” (seriously?!) simply will not hold water or serve any purpose other than making him feel good, and thereby dousing any chances that he might have to come up in the future. Well, he could not hold on to his own seat (which is supposed to be a Congress stronghold) and is still an MP only because he chose to contest from the safety of Wayanad also! His announcement that he was stepping down immediately post the drubbing his party got in the 2019 elections made me think that he might have learned something from the defeat. But, as it turned out, it was just the usual drama that he chooses to engage in every time they lose. And the other excuse about “party seniors not allowing him (or his mom or his sister) to step down” is plain balderdash. The fact of the matter is that they simply will not step down, and, as long as they cling on there, the party has no future whatsoever. They are fully responsible for the total mess that the country is in right now. The rot in the Congress party started with Indira Gandhi; she institutionalised corruption and turned the party into a family run business more than anything else! Her son, Rajiv, took the rot a step further by giving ground to the BJP to build its politics of hatred on with his brand of shameless appeasement politics and the subsequent Silanyas drama! Priyanka at least is a spontaneous speaker who has charisma, but she carries the dirty baggage of a douchebag of a husband! Rahul introduced himself to us Indians as an absolute idiot, with his utterly foolish interviews and speeches. And for him to outgrow that image that he created for himself is not just going to be a herculean task but pretty much impossible, because however much he tries to cover his “Pappu” image (with all the good boy drama and laboured efforts to project himself as an intellectual) it will keep shining from within, and the number of Indians who take him seriously are few and far between!

The congress said, immediately post the pasting that they got at the hands of the BJP in the 2019 elections, that they will have to reinvent itself - I think it was Shashi Tharoor who said that. If by reinventing what they meant was pouring the old wine into a new bottle and trying to pass it off as Single Malt, then they are simply out of the game completely, which, at the moment, they seem to be! The Congress, at this point in time, will remain a dead horse as long as they have the bro-sis-mom trio guiding them from one tunnel to the other, with no sign of any light at the end of any one of them!!!

കുറച്ചു ദിവസമായി യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള സ്തുതികൾ എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ/സി.പി.എം അനുഭാവികളിങ്ങനെ ചറപറാ സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയ വഴി പാടി തകർത്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്! എന്തിനാണാവോ ഇത്രയും കഷ്ടപ്പാടെന്നു നോക്കുമ്പോഴാണിതിലെ തമാശ പുറത്തു വരുന്നത്. എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ നേതാക്കൾ പ്രതിസ്ഥാനത്തായ പുതിയൊരു കുത്തുകേസ് പൊങ്ങിവന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇതിനു മുൻപും ഇതുപോലെ പല പല കേസുകളുമുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും, ഇത്തവണത്തെ വ്യത്യാസം നല്ലൊരു ശതമാനം വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ എസ.എഫ്.ഐ കോളേജിനുള്ളിൽ കാണിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന തോന്ന്യവാസങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ ശബ്ദമുയർത്തി എന്നതാണ്. ഇത് എസ.എഫ്.ഐ കാളകളെ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജ് എന്ന തൊഴുത്തിൽ പോറ്റി വളർത്തുന്ന ഭരണ കക്ഷിക്ക്‌ മരണ ക്ഷീണമായിപ്പോയി! സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ മുണ്ടും മടക്കിക്കുത്തി റോഡിലിറങ്ങി പോലീസിനും അധ്യാപകർക്കും നേരെ ഷോ കാണിക്കുന്ന മുതിർന്ന നേതാക്കളെയാരെയും ഇത്തവണ കണ്ടില്ല. വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ ഒന്നടങ്കം തെരുവിലിറങ്ങുമെന്നുള്ള സ്‌ഥിയായതിനാലും, അങ്ങനെയുണ്ടായാൽ അത് ഭരണ കക്ഷിയായ സി.പി.എമ്മിനെ നല്ല കാര്യമായി നാറ്റിക്കുമെന്നുള്ളതും ഇതിനൊരു പ്രധാന കാരണമാണ്! പഴയ അഭ്യാസങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചൊക്കെ ഓർത്തപ്പോൾ യു.ഡി.എഫ് ഭരണമെങ്ങാനുമായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ എന്ന് കോടിയേരി സഖാവും ബാച്ചും ചെറുതായെങ്കിലുമൊന്നാശിച്ചു പോയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ അവരെ കുറ്റം പറയാൻ പറ്റില്ല! ഹോ എന്ന ഒരിതായിരുന്നു... നടുറോട്ടിലിട്ടു പോലീസേമാന്മാരേയും, കോളേജിലെ സാറന്മാരേയുമൊക്കെ തെറി പറഞ്ഞു, വിരട്ടി പോസ്റ്ററാക്കുന്ന രംഗം ടീവിയിൽ വന്നത് സഖാക്കന്മാർ ഇന്നുമോർത്തു കോരിത്തരിക്കാറുണ്ടായിരിക്കും. ഇന്നിപ്പോൾ അതൊന്നും പറ്റില്ലല്ലോ, സ്വന്തം ഭരണമല്ലേ! പോരാത്തതിന് വീട്ടിൽ ചിലപ്പോൾ ഒരു കുഞ്ഞിക്കാല് ഫ്രീയായിട്ടിങ്ങെത്താനും സാധ്യത തെളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുവല്ലേ!!

എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ കോട്ട എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന, മാർക്സിൻറെയും, ലെനിനിൻറെയും ചിത്രങ്ങൾ കോളേജിനകത്തു പെയിൻറ് ചെയ്തു വച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഇതേ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിലാണ് ഞാൻ എൻറെ എം.എ ചെയ്തത്. എൽ.ഡി.എഫ് ഭരിക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത് പഞ്ചപുച്ഛമടക്കി മിണ്ടാതിരുക്കുകയും, യൂ.ഡി.എഫ് ഭരണം വരുമ്പോൾ സെക്രെട്ടറിയേറ്റിനു മുന്നിൽ കയ്യാങ്കളി നടത്താനും, പൊതുമുതൽ നശിപ്പിച്ചു ഷോ കാണിക്കാനും പാർട്ടി നിയോഗിച്ചു, പോറ്റി വളർത്തിയിരുന്ന വെറും തറ ഗുണ്ടകൾ (പല, പല കോഴ്സുകളിലായി ചേർന്ന്, സ്ഥിരമായി അവിടെത്തന്നെ കുറ്റിയടിച്ചിരുന്നവാന്മാർ), ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നവിടെ; ഇന്നുമുണ്ടാവും, എന്നുമുണ്ടാവും.  യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിനകത്ത് ആയുധശേഖരം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നുള്ളതും അവിടെ പഠിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന എല്ലാവർക്കുമറിയാവുന്ന രഹസ്യമായിരുന്നു! അവിടെ പഠിച്ച മഹാന്മാരുടെ കണക്കു പലരും നിരത്തുന്നത് കണ്ടു, എം.പി മാരുടെയും, ഡി.ജി.പി മാരുടെയും, സാഹിത്യകാരന്മാരുടെയും, പേരുകേട്ട സിനിമാപ്രവർത്തകരുടെയും, ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാരുടെയും മറ്റും പേരുകൾ! പക്ഷെ ഇവിടെ കാലാകാലങ്ങളായി പഠിച്ചുവന്ന സി.പി.എം/എസ.എഫ്.ഐ ഗുണ്ടാ മഹാരഥന്മാരുടെ കണക്കാരും നിരത്തുന്നത് കണ്ടില്ല. സോഷ്യലിസമൊക്കെയാകുമ്പോൾ അവരുടെ പേരുംകൂടെ പറയേണ്ടേ? അവരും മനുഷ്യരല്ലേ? നഷ്ടപ്പെടുവാൻ കൈവിലങ്ങുകളല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നുമില്ലാത്ത പാവങ്ങൾ! ഇപ്പോൾ പിടിയിലായ യൂണിറ്റ് സെക്രെട്ടറിയെയും പ്രസിഡൻറിനെയും തന്നെ നോക്കൂ, എത്ര തങ്കം പോലത്തെ പിള്ളേർ, പിന്നെ കുറച്ചു മോഷണവും, കുറച്ചു കത്തിക്കുത്തും, ഗുണ്ടായിസവുമൊക്കെ കൈമുതലായുണ്ടെന്നല്ലേ ഉള്ളു? അതൊക്കെ ഒരു തെറ്റാണോ? മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിലെ അഭിമന്യുവിനെ കുത്തിക്കൊന്നപ്പോഴുള്ളതുപോലുള്ള സി.പി.എമ്മിൻറെ ആ ശക്തമായ ഇടപെടൽ ഇവിടെയും കണ്ട് കേരളക്കരയാകെ നടുങ്ങിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്! കുറച്ചൂടെ നടുങ്ങണമെങ്കിൽ പാർട്ടി ചാനലായ കൈരളി ടീവിയിലെ വാർത്തകൾ കണ്ടാൽ മതി, ന്യായീകരണ-തൊഴിലാളി ഐക്യം ശരിക്കു കാണാം!

സ്വന്തം സംഘടനകൾക്കകത്തു നേതാക്കന്മാർ നടത്തുന്ന ശുദ്ധ പോക്കിരിത്തരങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ കണ്ണടയ്‌ക്കുന്ന ന്യായീകരണ-തൊഴിലാളികളായ അണികളും, സ്വന്തം വിദ്യാർത്ഥി സംഘടനയും അണികളും നടത്തുന്ന പോക്കിരിത്തരങ്ങൾക്ക്‌ കുടപിടിക്കുന്ന നേതൃത്വവും, ഇതുപോലൊരു കോമ്പിനേഷൻ വേറെ എവിടെക്കാണും? ബേയ്നാമികളുടെ കമ്പനികളിൽ ജോലി നോക്കുന്ന മക്കളും, അവർക്കു ജോലിയൊപ്പിച്ചു കൊടുക്കാനും, അവരെ കേസുകളിൽ നിന്നൂരാനും നടക്കുന്ന തന്തമാരും നയിക്കുന്ന വിപ്ലവ പാർട്ടി... അഴിമതിരഹിതം, സുതാര്യം, അതിസുന്ദരം! കുറച്ചുനാൾ മുൻപ് മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിൻറെ ഹോസ്റ്റലിൽ നിന്ന് ആയുധശേഖരം കണ്ടെടുത്തപ്പോൾ, നിയമസഭയിൽ അതിനെതിരെ ചോദ്യമുയർന്നു. ആതിനുത്തരമായി "അവിടെ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചത് കെട്ടിട നിർമാണത്തിനുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന കമ്പിയും വെട്ടുകത്തിയുമൊക്കെയാണെന്നാണ്" മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി പിണറായി വിജയൻ നിയമസഭയിൽ മൊഴിഞ്ഞത്! വിജയൻറെ തന്നെ ആഭ്യന്തര വകുപ്പിന് കീഴിലുള്ള പൊലീസ് പിടിച്ചെടുത്ത ആയുധങ്ങൾ നിരത്തി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതും, മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിലെ ഒരു എസ.എഫ്.ഐ മാന്യദേഹം അവിടത്തെ പ്രിസിപ്പലിനെതിരെ കയർക്കുന്നതിൻറെയും, അവരെ ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിൻറെയും ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെയുള്ള എല്ലാ ന്യൂസ് ചാനലുകളിലും വരികയും കേരളക്കരയിലെല്ലാവരും കണ്ടതുമാണ്! അടഞ്ഞു കിടന്നിരുന്ന മുറിയിൽ ഗോവണിവെച്ചു ജനാല വഴി അതിക്രമിച്ചു കയറിയാണ് "കെട്ടിട നിർമാണ സാമഗ്രികൾ" അവിടെ ശേഖരിച്ചത്. ആ തോന്ന്യാസം കാണിച്ചവന്മാരെ പിടിച്ചകത്തിടുന്നതിനു പകരം അവരെ സംരക്ഷിച്ചു സംസാരിക്കുവാനും, ഈ കുറ്റകൃത്യം പുറത്തുകൊണ്ടുവന്ന അധ്യാപകരെയും, താൻ തന്നെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന ആഭ്യന്തര വകുപ്പിൻറെ കീഴിലുള്ള പൊലീസുകാരെയും നാട്ടുകാരുടെ മുന്നിൽ വെറും കോമാളികളും, വിഡ്ഢികളുമായി (നിയമസഭയ്ക്കുള്ളിൽ) ചിത്രീകരിക്കുകയാണ് മുഖ്യൻ ചെയ്തത്! ഇതാണ് ശരിക്കും ഇടതുപക്ഷത്തിൻറെ നയം!

യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിൽ പഠിച്ചവർ പലരും വളരെ വലിയ നിലയിലെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടാവാം, അത് കോളേജ് കെട്ടിടത്തിൻറെയോ, എസ.എഫ്.ഐ-ഗുണ്ടകളുടെയോ ഗുണം കൊണ്ടല്ലല്ലോ, അവിടത്തെ അധ്യാപകരുടെയും, ആ പഠിച്ച വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെയും ഗുണംകൊണ്ട് മാത്രമല്ലേ! നമ്മൾ പഠിച്ച കോളേജിനോടും സ്കൂളിനോടുമൊക്കെ നമുക്കൊരു പ്രത്യേക സ്നേഹം തോന്നുന്നത് സ്വാഭാവികം. നമ്മുടെ സ്വകാര്യ ഓർമകളിൽ അവയ്ക്കുള്ള സ്ഥാനവും വലുതായിരിക്കും. പക്ഷെ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിനെപ്പോലെ മഹത്തായ പാരമ്പര്യമുള്ളൊരു കലാലയത്തെ ഞാൻ മേൽപ്പറഞ്ഞപോലെ എസ.എഫ്.ഐ കാളകളെ പോറ്റാനായി സി.പി.എം നടത്തുന്ന വെറുമൊരു കാലിത്തൊഴുത്തായി മാറ്റിയിരിക്കുന്നത് (അതും വർഷങ്ങളായി) വളരെ കഷ്ടമാണെന്നു മാത്രമല്ല, തലസ്ഥാന നഗരമധ്യത്തിൽ ഇങ്ങനൊരു കാലിത്തൊഴുത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത് ഈ നാടിനുതന്നെ കളങ്കമാണ്. ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു സ്ഥലത്തെ പൂർവ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയായിരുന്നു എന്ന് പറയുന്നതിൽ ഞാനൊരഭിമാനവും കാണുന്നുമില്ല.

എ.കെ. ആൻറണി സർക്കാരിൻറെ സമയത്ത് ഡിഗ്രി ലെവൽ കോഴ്സുകളെല്ലാം അവിടെ നിന്നും കാര്യവട്ടം ക്യാമ്പസ്സിലേക്ക് മാറ്റാൻ തീരുമാനമായിരുന്നു. കേരളത്തിൽ ഇന്നേവരെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ഗവൺമെൻറെടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള ഏറ്റവും ധീരവും നല്ലതുമായ തീരുമാനങ്ങളിലൊന്നായയിരുന്നു അത്. തൊട്ടു പിന്നാലെ വന്ന എൽ. ഡി. എഫ് സർക്കാർ എല്ലാം പഴയപടി തിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. ഈ സ്ഥാപനാമവിടില്ലാതെ അവരുടെ കലാപരിപാടികൾ നടത്താനും, ശിവരഞ്ജിത്തിനെയും, നസീമിനെയും പോലുള്ള എച്ചിൽതീനികളെ വളർത്തി വലുതാക്കി ഭാവിയിലെ ബല്യ, ബല്യ സഖാക്കളാക്കാനും പറ്റില്ലല്ലോ!! കഷ്ടം!!!

മീശ ചുരുണ്ടുകൂടുമ്പോൾ മലയാളി കോമാളിയാകുന്നുവോ??!!

ഒരു കഥയിലെ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം മറ്റൊരു കഥാപാത്രത്തോട് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ഭാഗമെടുത്ത് അതു കഥാകൃത്തിൻറെ അഭിപ്രായമാണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ബഹളമുണ്ടാക്കാൻ വിവരമില്ലായ്മ ഒരലങ്കാരമായി കൊണ്ട് നടക്കുന്ന സംഘികൾക്കും അവരുടെതന്നെ പ്രതിബിംബങ്ങളായുള്ള സുഡാപ്പികൾക്കും മാത്രം സാധിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രത്യേക കഴിവാണ്. "Not letting your education get in the way of your ignorance" എന്നതിൻറെ നേർകാഴ്ച !!! പണ്ടെവിടെയോ (ഇതുപോലുള്ള വേറെയേതോ വിവരക്കേടിനോട് പ്രതികരിച്ച്) ആരോ ഇട്ട ഒരു കോമെൻറാണ് പെട്ടെന്നോർമ വന്നത്, "ക്ലാസ്സിൽ പോയി നാലക്ഷരം പഠിക്കേണ്ട സമയത്ത് ശാഖയിലും, മദ്രസ്സയിലും പോയി പുറമ്പോക്ക് പഠനം നടത്തിയാലിങ്ങനിരിക്കും!"

ഇതൊരു വാർത്തയാക്കി പൊലിപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുവന്നവനോ (വരോ) വരുത്തിത്തീർക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നപോലെ ഇത് കഥയെഴുതിയ ആൾ പറഞ്ഞൊരഭിപ്രായമോ, നോവലിൽത്തന്നെ പൊതുവായി വന്ന ഒരു പരാമർശമോ അല്ല, മറിച്ച്, മേൽപറഞ്ഞപോലെ, ഇതൊരു സാങ്കൽപ്പിക കഥാപാത്രം മറ്റൊരു കഥാപാത്രത്തോട് പറയുന്ന കാര്യമാണ്. വളരെ ആസൂത്രിതമായി ഇതോരു വിവാദമായി കുത്തിപ്പൊക്കുന്നതിലുള്ള ഗൂഢ ലക്ഷ്യവും, അതിനെ അനുകൂലിച്ചുള്ള പ്രതികരണങ്ങളിൽ നല്ലൊരു ശതമാനം ഏച്ചുകെട്ടിയവയാണെന്നുള്ളതും (സ്വന്തം മനസാക്ഷിയെത്തന്നെ വഞ്ചിക്കുന്നവ), ഇത് നടക്കുന്നത് വിവരമുള്ളവരുടെ നാടെന്നു നമ്മളഹങ്കരിക്കുന്ന കേരളത്തിലാണെന്നുള്ളതുമാണ് ഏറ്റവുമധികം നമ്മെ അലട്ടേണ്ട പ്രശനം. ഈ വിവരക്കേടിനെ അനുകൂലിച്ചു പ്രതികരിക്കുന്ന മഹാന്മാരിലും മഹതികളിലും നൂറിൽ തൊണ്ണൂറ്റൊൻപതു പേരും ഈ നോവൽ വായിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എന്നതാണ് ഏറ്റവും വലിയ തമാശ! മാതൃഭൂമി ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിൽ ഖണ്ഡശ്ശ: പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന നോവലിനെതിരെ പ്രതികരിച്ച് മാതൃഭൂമി പത്രം കത്തിച്ചും, കക്കൂസിലിട്ടും ഫോട്ടോ എടുത്തു ഫേയ്സ്ബുക്കിലും, വാട്ട്സാപ്പിലും, ഇൻസ്റ്റാഗ്രാമിലുമൊക്കെ ഇട്ടും ഷെയർ ചെയ്തും സായൂജ്യമടയുന്ന അണ്ണന്മാരുടെയും അണ്ണികളുടെയും എണ്ണം നോക്കിയാൽ മതി ഇത് മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ. അണ്ണികളിൽ പലരും മുണ്ടും നേര്യതുമൊക്കെയണിഞ്ഞു, മുടിയിൽ പൂചൂടി കേരളീയ ശൈലിയിൽ വേഷമിട്ട് (ഈപ്പറഞ്ഞ വേഷം എന്നുമുതലാണ് കേരളീയമായതെന്നുള്ളത് തത്കാലത്തേക്കു വിട്ടേക്കാം) സെൽഫിയെടുത്തിടുന്നതാണ് കക്കൂസ് പടങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ കണ്ണുകൾക്കൊരാശ്വാസം!!

ഇനി വിവരമുണ്ടായിട്ടും വിവരമില്ലായ്മ നടിക്കുന്ന ഗണത്തിൽ പെടാത്ത പാവം ഗ്രാസ്റൂട്ട് ഭക്തന്മാർക്കും ഭക്തകൾക്കും വേണ്ടി ഒന്നുദാഹരിക്കാം; നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു കഥയെഴുതുന്നു, അതിലെ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം അത്യന്തം സ്ത്രീ വിരുദ്ധത ഓരോ വാക്കിലും പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരാഭാസനാണ്. കഥയിലെ ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തിൻറെ വാക്കുകളെയും അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളെയും, അയാളങ്ങനെ ഒരാളാണെന്നിരിക്കെ, നിങ്ങളെങ്ങനെ എഴുതി പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കും? ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തിൻറെ അഭിപ്രായങ്ങൾ ഏതു രീതിയിൽ നിങ്ങളുടെ സ്വന്തം അഭിപ്രായമാകും? ഇത് മാതൃഭൂമി ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിൽ വന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന മീശ എന്ന നോവലിലെ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം മറ്റൊരു കഥാപാത്രത്തോട് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന വാക്കുകളാണ്, അതിനെ മാത്രം മനപ്പൂർവം വെട്ടിയെടുത്ത് പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ്, അല്ലാതെ ആ കഥാകൃത്ത് സ്വന്തം അഭിപ്രായം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ലേഖനത്തിൽ നിന്നെടുത്തതല്ല!

ഒരു കാര്യമാലോചിച്ചാൽ ഇതിലെ പൊള്ളത്തരം മനസ്സിലാകും. 'നിർമാല്യം' എന്നൊരു സിനിമ നിങ്ങളിലെത്രപേർ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നെനിക്കറിഞ്ഞു കൂടാ. മലയാളത്തിൽ ഇന്നേവരെ ഇറങ്ങിയിട്ടുള്ള ഏറ്റവും നല്ല സിനിമകളിലൊന്നാണത്, ഇതുവരെക്കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിൽ തീർച്ചയായും കാണണം. അതിലെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രമായ വെളിച്ചപ്പാടിനെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത് പി ജെ ആന്റണിയാണ്, എം ടി വാസുദേവൻ നായരുടെ കഥയും സിനിമയുമാണ് . ആ സിനിമയുടെ അവസാനം വെളിച്ചപ്പാട് ഉറഞ്ഞുതുള്ളി ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ വാതിൽ തള്ളിത്തുറന്നകത്തു കയറി ദേവിയുടെ വിഗ്രഹത്തെ ദയനീയമായി നോക്കിയിട്ടതിലോട്ടു കാറി തുപ്പും. ഈ പറഞ്ഞ ന്യായം വച്ചാണെങ്കിൽ തുപ്പിയ പി ജേ ആന്റണി-യും കഥയെഴുതിയ എം ടി-യും കുറ്റക്കാരാണല്ലോ. എടുത്തു ചാടി പ്രതികരിക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്നേ ഇതിലെ ശുദ്ധ വിഡ്ഢിത്തം ഒന്നാലോചിച്ചു നോക്കൂ. ഈ വാർത്ത ഉണ്ടാക്കിയവൻറെ ഉദ്ദേശവും അതുതന്നെയാണ്‌!

വിവരമില്ലായ്മ ചൊറി പോലെയാണ്, അതൊരു സാംക്രമിക രോഗമാണോ എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചാൽ ആണ്, പക്ഷെ അതൊരലങ്കാരമായി കാണിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്നതും, ആഘോഷമാക്കുന്നതും മാനസികരോഗത്തിൻറെ ലക്ഷണമാകാം!!!

ചക്രവ്യൂഹത്തിലെ ചുവപ്പുനിഴൽ!

ഇസ്ലാമിക ഭീകരവാദത്തിനെതിരെ ഇടതുപക്ഷത്തു നിന്നുപോലും ശബ്ദമുയർത്താൻ ആരും മുന്നോട്ടു വരുന്നില്ല എന്നുള്ളത് വോട്ട് ബാങ്ക്സിനോടുള്ള അവരുടെ വിധേയത്വവും ആശയപരമായ കാപട്യവുമാണ് വെളിവാക്കുന്നത്. ഇടതുപക്ഷ പാർട്ടികളുടെയും പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെയും ഈ ഒരു "നന്മയുടെ വ്യാജവേഷംകെട്ടൽ" നിലപാടാണ് ഹിന്ദു തീവ്രവാദം വളരാൻ ഏറ്റവും നല്ല വളമായി മാറുന്നത്.

അഭിമന്യുവി ൻറെ കൊലപാതകം അതിക്രൂരവും, അത്യന്തം അപലപനീയവുമാണെന്നിരിക്കെത്തന്നെ ഒരു കാര്യം പറയാതിരിക്കാൻ വയ്യ. അവൻറെ മരണത്തിൽ അവനെ കൊന്നവർക്കുള്ളപോലെ തന്നെ പങ്ക് അക്രമ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്ന അവൻറെ സ്വന്തം സംഘടനയായ എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ-ക്കുമുണ്ട്. സ്വന്തം കൂട്ടത്തിലൊരാൾ അതിദാരുണമായി കൊലചെയ്യപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ മാത്രം അക്രമ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിനെതിരെ ശബ്ദമുയർത്തിയിട്ടും, ഘോരഘോരം പ്രസംഗിച്ചിട്ടും കാര്യമില്ല, തങ്ങളുടെ തന്നെ പ്രവൃത്തികൾ അതിനെത്രത്തോളം വളം വെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാകുമെന്നൊരാത്മവിചിന്തനം നടത്തുന്നത് നന്നായിരിക്കും. അഭിമന്യു പഠിച്ചിരുന്ന മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിൻറെ ഹോസ്റ്റലിൽ നിന്ന് കഴിഞ്ഞകൊല്ലം മേയ് മാസം ആയുധശേഖരം കണ്ടെടുത്തപ്പോൾ, നിയമസഭയിൽ അതിനെതിരെ ഉയർന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിനുത്തരമായി, അവിടെ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചത് കെട്ടിട നിർമാണത്തിനുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന കമ്പിയും വെട്ടുകത്തിയുമൊക്കെയാണെന്നാണ് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി നിയമസഭയിൽ മൊഴിഞ്ഞത്. പൊലീസ് പിടിച്ചെടുത്ത ആയുധങ്ങൾ നിരത്തി വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതും, മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിലെ ഒരു എസ.എഫ്.ഐ മാന്യദേഹം അവിടത്തെ പ്രിസിപ്പലിനെതിരെ കയർക്കുന്നതിന്റെയും, അവരെ ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിൻറെയും ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെയുള്ള എല്ലാ ന്യൂസ് ചാനലുകളിലും വന്നു നാമെല്ലാം കണ്ടതാണ്! അടഞ്ഞു കിടന്നിരുന്ന മുറിയിൽ ഗോവണിവെച്ചു ജനാല വഴി അതിക്രമിച്ചു കയറിയാണ് "കെട്ടിട നിർമാണ സാമഗ്രികൾ" അവിടെ ശേഖരിച്ചത്. ആ തോന്ന്യാസം കാണിച്ചവന്മാരെ പിടിച്ചകത്തിടുന്നതിനു പകരം അവരെ സംരക്ഷിച്ചു സംസാരിക്കുവാനും, ഈ കുറ്റകൃത്യം പുറത്തുകൊണ്ടുവന്ന അധ്യാപകരെയും, താൻ തന്നെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന ആഭ്യന്തര വകുപ്പിൻറെ കീഴിലുള്ള പൊലീസുകാരെയും നാട്ടുകാരുടെ മുന്നിൽ വെറും കോമാളികളും, വിഡ്ഢികളുമായി (നിയമസഭയ്ക്കുള്ളിൽ) ചിത്രീകരിക്കുകയാണ് മുഖ്യൻ ചെയ്തത്! ഇതാണ് ഇടതുപക്ഷത്തിൻറെ നയം!!

ഞാൻ എൻറെ എം.എ ചെയ്തത് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിലാണ്; എസ എഫ് ഐ കോട്ട എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന, കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് നേതാക്കന്മാരുടെ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ കോളേജിനകത്തു പെയിന്റ് ചെയ്ത് വച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്ന യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിൽ. അവിടെ എസ.എഫ്.ഐ-ക്കെതിരെ ഇലക്ഷന് ആരെങ്കിലും നിന്നാൽ തല്ലു മേടിക്കും! എസ.എഫ്.ഐ പ്രവർത്തനത്തിനെന്ന പേരിൽ പല, പല കോഴ്സുകളിലായി ചേർന്ന്, സ്ഥിരമായി അവിടെത്തന്നെ കുറ്റിയടിച്ചിരുന്ന ഗുണ്ടകളുണ്ടായിരുന്നവിടെ (എന്താ പ്രവർത്തനം!!!). എൽ.ഡി.എഫ് ഭരിക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത് പഞ്ചപുച്ഛമടക്കി മിണ്ടാതിരുക്കുകയും, യൂ.ഡി.എഫ് ഭരണം വരുമ്പോൾ സെക്രെട്ടറിയേറ്റിനു മുന്നിൽ കയ്യാങ്കളി നടത്താനും, പൊതുമുതൽ നശിപ്പിച്ചു ഷോ കാണിക്കാനും പാർട്ടി നിയോഗിച്ചു, പോറ്റി വളർത്തിയിരുന്ന ഗുണ്ടകൾ! യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിനകത്ത് ആയുധശേഖരം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നുള്ളത് അവിടെ പഠിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന എല്ലാവർക്കുമറിയാവുന്ന രഹസ്യമായിരുന്നു! എ.കെ. ആൻറണി സർക്കാരിൻറെ സമയത്താണ്, യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിന് പുറകിലുള്ള രണ്ട് ഗെയ്റ്റുകൾ മാറ്റി മതിലടച്ചുകെട്ടാനും (പോലീസ് ഓടിച്ചിട്ട് പിടിക്കാൻ വരുമ്പോൾ രക്ഷപെട്ട് എ.കെ.ജി സെൻററിൽ കയറി ഒളിക്കാനുള്ള എസ്കേപ്പ് റൂട്ട് ആയിരുന്നു ആ രണ്ടു ഗെയ്റ്റും!) ഡിഗ്രി ലെവൽ കോഴ്സുകളെല്ലാം അവിടെ നിന്നും കാര്യവട്ടം ക്യാമ്പസ്സിലേക്ക് മാറ്റാനും തീരുമാനമായി. തൊട്ടു പിന്നാലെ വന്ന എൽ. ഡി. എഫ് സർക്കാർ എല്ലാം പഴയപടി തിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുവന്നു; മതിൽ പൊളിച്ചില്ല, ഭാഗ്യം!!

ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നത് അക്രമ രാഷ്ട്രീയം ക്യാമ്പസ്സുകൾക്കുള്ളിൽ കൊണ്ടുനടത്തുന്നതിലും, കൊണ്ടാടുന്നതിലും മറ്റേതു സംഘടനയ്ക്കുള്ളതിലുമോ അതിലേറെയോ പങ്ക് എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ-ക്കുണ്ട് എന്നാണ്. അത് മറച്ചുവച്ചിട്ടോ, അതിനെതിരെ കണ്ണടച്ചിരുട്ടാക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടോ കാര്യമില്ല… അതിനെതിരായി പ്രതികരിക്കണം. അങ്ങനെയൊരു പ്രതികരണം ഒരിടത്തുനിന്നും ഇതു വരെ കാണാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല (ഒരിക്കലും, ഒരു സംഭവത്തിന് ശേഷവും കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുമില്ല). ഒരാൾ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ, അയാൾ പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചിരുന്ന പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിനൊന്നും നഷ്ടമാവുന്നില്ല, അവർക്കു ലാഭമാണത്, ഒരു രക്തസാക്ഷിയെക്കൂടെ കിട്ടിയ, ഉളുപ്പില്ലാത്ത, ഗൂഢ ലാഭം!  നഷ്ടം മരിച്ചയാളുടെ ഉറ്റവർക്കും ഉടയവർക്കും മാത്രം!

It has not just been amusing but almost comical to watch (and read) ardent, staunch fans of Narendra Modi (hereinafter referred to as Modi-Toadies, courtesy Salman Rushdie) recklessly come up with one nonsensical argument after the other to somehow try and justify their supreme leader’s demonetisation faux pas (which he imposed on a hapless nation on the 8th of November), in the wake of the incriminating data contained in the recently released annual report of the Reserve Bank of India.  With the RBI announcing that 99% of the banned notes came back, it has become patently evident that demonetisation was at best a myopic, unimaginative, ill-conceived and pathetically executed idea that hardly looks like a well thought out policy, but instead reeks of the handiwork of some illiterate, ignorant cheapjack forger!  Demonization achieved none of the objectives set out by the Modi government, not just on November 8th, but almost every other day till the 31st of December, as it regularly kept shifting goal posts, from black money to counterfeit currency to terror funding to cashless economy to less cash economy, and so on.

More than a hundred people lost their lives and the lives of millions across the country were thrown into disarray.  Mr Venkiah Naidu’s insensitive response in parliament, comparing the people’s hardship to child birth, and saying, “once the child is born, the mother's happiness knows no bound," epitomised the sheer mindlessness and lack of understanding of the situation on the part of the government.  Somebody should have told Mr Naidu that to the loved ones of those who lost their lives, the pain can never be temporary, that their loss is permanent, and that he was one among the perpetrators of such a gross violation of their fundamental right to live.  Meanwhile, the prime minister, who set out on a trip to Japan (as is his wont) was seen joking about how people did not have money to conduct their daughters’ weddings, or to arrange for their mothers’ funerals (in front of an appreciative group of as-insensitive-as-their-messiah Modi-toadies).  Just as you were about to think how a head of state can be so cold-hearted and inconsiderate, lo and behold, you see him standing on a podium in Goa, screaming at the top of his voice and gesticulating and sobbing, asking the people of India to give him just 50 days to weed out ill-gotten wealth in the country (that, by the way, was the first change of goal post; at the time of his initial announcement, he had said everything would be back to normal in a matter of a week or two at best).

It has been almost ten months since the Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes were banned (which constituted a whopping 86% of the total cash in circulation) by the Narendra Modi government, the news of which was announced to the people of India by the man himself, over national television.  So where do we stand now in terms of black money and terror funding and cashless economy et al?  Statistics show that none, not one, of the objectives set out by the government has been met.  It turns out that the fears expressed by most economists (people who have studied the stuff and hold genuine degrees) including the likes of Amartya Sen, Arun Kumar, Jean Drèze, Thomas Isaac, and Manmohan Singh, immediately following Modi’s initial announcement, that this is going to be a colossal failure and that it is going to hurt a booming economy and pull it backwards have come true.  Manmohan even went to the extent of calling it organised loot and “legalised plunder of the economy” on the floor of the house, and he warned that it will bring down India's GDP growth by a massive two percentage points. The GDP figures announced for the latest quarter have proved him right, with it clocking a three-year low of 5.7%.  Mr Arun Kumar had, in fact, warned that this is going to be a futile exercise and that “the scheme was imposed on the country with little or no forethought”. He said that “it must be understood that the black money the government was targeting is only about 1% of the black wealth held in the country and only 3.5% of the black income generated in 2016”.  He went on to say that even if all the black cash in circulation was sucked out somehow, the effect on the black economy would be minimal, and that “80% of the currency in 1000- and 500-rupee notes in circulation was not black money, but rather white money used by businesses and citizens”.  With 99% of the invalidated currency coming back, his warnings have proved prophetic.  Prof Sen called demonetisation a “gigantic mistake” and Mr Drèze  said, “demonetisation in a booming economy is like shooting at the tyres of a racing car.”  Kerala’s finance minister, Mr Thomas Isaac said it was an “insane decision.”

Modi chose to take a dig at the economists and their educational qualifications (his own being a bit iffy) by indulging some vulgar punning, saying that “hard work is better than Harvard”.  But with the economy choosing to take a nosedive, he had to do something in terms of damage control.  And what does he do; he chooses the Independence Day address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort to lie to the nation again, saying that Rs.3 lakh crores of black money had come back to the banking system.  This was in direct contradiction to the statements made by Mr Arun Jaitley and his underling, Mr Santosh Gangwar, in the period between December 2016 and August 1, 2017.  Subsequently, the data released by the RBI, India’s central bank, showed that it had received notes worth Rs 15.28 lakh crore (notes worth Rs 15.45 lakh crore was rendered invalid by demonetisation!)

Mr Arun Jaitley came up with a risible new explanation.  He said that the objective of the exercise had not been confiscation, but the “formalisation of the economy, attack on black money, less-cash economy, bigger tax base, digitisation, a blow to terrorism.”  Sounds pretty cool, but none of these have been achieved either!  While the “attack on black money” bit now sounds more like a joke, although there was a jump in digital transactions during the period of the cash crunch, this has since come down drastically after banks have been re-monetized.  Whereas, according to the individual income tax returns data (e-filing) from the Income Tax Department’s records, the number of filings increased from 43.3 million to 52.9 million between financial years 2016 and 2017.  This is not significantly more than what was achieved between financial years 2015 and 2016.  As for it curbing terror funding, the available data shows a different picture.  According to the South Asia Terrorism Portal (www.satp.org), the comparison of data from 10 months before the notes ban (January through November 2016) and the 10 months after shows a 38% rise in the number of terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. The number of security personnel killed has risen by 2%.  In naxal-affected states, terror incidents are down 45% but the number of security personnel killed is up by a whopping 82%.  Again, the claim that demonetisation was used to reduce cash (and thereby curb corruption!) looks all set to go out of the window when you look at the three-month average pace at which cash is re-entering the system, and the  levels of cash in circulation should be almost back to pre-demonetisation levels in two to three months.

The argument that the Modi-toadies cling on to desperately is that the people accepted demonetisation and that is why the BJP won in elections that were held post demonetisation.  The fact remains that policy decisions that deal with the economy cannot be evaluated on the sentiments of the electorate. Moreover, elections took place in five states, and, as Mr P Chidambaram pointed out, if the BJP’s win in Uttar Pradesh proves that people have accepted demonetisation, what does its electoral losses in Punjab, and Goa and Assam (where they came second) prove?  However hard Modi-toadies (or Modi and his toadies) try to justify this utterly brainless move and try to hoodwink people, every argument will bring them back to where they are, holding an empty sack. Demonetisation has been an abject failure as a policy and it is becoming increasingly evident that the mastermind behind such an ill-judged, myopic and vacuous policy is not someone well-versed or qualified in economics, but it has the fingerprints of someone who believes that he studied 'Entire Political Science' all over it!

The Great (Mo)Demonetization Farce!!

Does the fact that he was chosen by the majority make Mr Modi (G) any less of a moron, as someone who thinks that he can run a country through newspaper headlines and gimmickry? Does that change the fact that we live in a country where half the population or more do not have bank accounts (with an economy where cash transactions account for a major chunk - more than 80% - of consumer payments)? And if Mr Modi claims or tries to be smarter or wiser than others (or even "more patriotic" than others - whatever TF that means!) by making 500 and 1000 rupee notes redundant overnight (that BTW accounts for more than 85% of the total cash available in the country!), just that fact that he was chosen by a majority does not make him any less of a fool; nor does his being the Prime Minister of the country make it a wise decision in anyway. It only highlights his lack of political gravitas and his nearsightedness.

He thinks it is okay to put an entire country and its people through this nonsense just to gain points (brownie or moolah) in the run up to the assembly elections in one of the most politically important states in the country, Uttar Pradesh. And if the reports that are coming in are anything to go by, far from being the "top secret move" that it is claimed to be, many people seem to have been in the know of the imminent demonetization announcement, and the surge in bank deposits over the preceding month (or a couple of months) stand testimony to that argument. All the "steps-towards-curbing-black-money" talk is plain hogwash. If the intention was indeed to put a hold on the black money menace by abolishing larger currency denominations (as is being purported), what explains the introduction of 2000 rupee notes and the announcement by the finance minister the other day that 1000 rupee notes will be re-introduced, albeit in new clothing, within a month's time? Demonetization as a policy has a spectacular history of being a failure every time it has been introduced (not just in India, but across the world). The BJP themselves, through its national spokesman, Meenakshi Lekhi, called it a "gimmick" and a "strongly ant-poor measure" when the UPA government mulled over demonitizing notes printed before 2005. She went on to say, and I quote, "This policy of Mr. P Chidambaram is only meant for the blue blood and not for the sweating, red-blooded, toiling millions. It is not going to affect those who have numbered accounts in Swiss banks, but will hit those who do not have any bank account even in India!!” Please watch the attached video.

It just proves that this is, very simply put, a gimmick to divert attention from all the grave social and political failures of this government in the past two and a half years. Story telling (or to use their own jargon, Jumla) seems to be their SOP, or their bread and butter; first it was the "surgical strike" and now this! And, amidst all this, the funniest thing is the rapturous heights this utterly brainless announcement has taken the Modi-toadies (read bhakths) to, as is evident from their constant verbal diarrhea all across the social media! In fact I had the misfortune of having an argument (being buttonholed by would be a better expression) with a particularly officious member of their tribe - that lasted close to an hour and a half - where he had no answers to any of the questions I asked but kept on blabbering the usual "18-hour workday-two hours' sleep-best PM-UNESCO-muslim-terrorism-Nawaz Sharif peeing in his pants--Pakistan isolated-world leaders admiring our PM-and the rest of the blah blah". Just underscored something I had written about them earlier "Arguing with a bhakth is rather like trying to play chess with a pigeon; it knocks the pieces over, craps on the board, and flies back to its flock to claim victory!!"
